Brought and now owned by Meta (Facebook) in 2014 for $19 billion, Whatsapp stands both as a seperate messaging app and included in Meta’s business solution toolkit. Since taking it over, Meta has been quite forward and allowing people Facebook page owners to use it as part of their business messaging. It is used by millions of people around the world to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. But the question we’re asking, is WhatsApp a social media platform and can it be part of your social media strategy? This article will explore the features of WhatsApp and discuss whether it can be considered a social media platform. We will look at how it is used, the types of content shared, and the impact it has had on our lives. Finally, we will draw a conclusion about whether WhatsApp is a social media platform or not.

Everything I mentioned above can be said the same for Facebook Messenger, so what’s the difference? Although there are some differences, I believe the main driving factor for WhatsApp is that it’s not typical social media platform. You don’t need to look at posts from friends, family, and videos from random pages. People on WhatsApp also don’t have to deal with unsolicited adverts, though that is changing. So I believe for many, WhatsApp is a communication tool without the annoyance of social posting.

As I mentioned above, WhatsApp works like Facebook Messenger but with key differences. I honestly find Messenger a little bit more clunky compared to WhatsApp. But if you’re not using WhatsApp yet and want to start, here are some ways to use it to enhance your social media presence. So not just for messaging, but actively use it to post your content because for me, WhatsApp can be a great tool to help you do just that! Here are some tips on how to use WhatsApp to your advantage:

  • Voice and video calls: WhatsApp also allows you to make voice and video calls, making it a great way to stay connected with friends and family.
  • You dont need to login like you do with Facebook Messenger, access is via your mobile phone.
  • You can send documents across to other users.
  • Ability to send Whatsapp status to all contacts.

Cons:

  • Limited features: While WhatsApp is great for messaging and calls, it lacks many of the features found on other social media platforms, such as the ability to post photos and videos.
  • Ads: WhatsApp recently started showing ads in its Status feature, which can be annoying for some users.

And my favourite setting is WhatsApp’s ability to send your status to all your contacts for 24 hours. It’s a great little tool for sending out flash alerts that help you become more visible to your audience.

I do find that although Meta has allowed business page owners to add it as a ‘contact us’ tool, it still doesn’t connect with other non-Meta apps as well. There are many workarounds, but when using WhatsApp in CRM systems, it requires users to replace text messaging services rather than work alongside it. Meta could be more giving with the API for developers to use.

So does this make Whatsapp a social media app

Before Meta bought it, I would have only ever classified it as a messaging tool, but with the development of groups, announcements,  status updates, and the ability to send images, reply to, and search for content, I’d classify WhatsApp as “social,” making it a social media app.
